Why men don't bother me aka Why I love books.

So it is sort of a running joke with me and my friends that I am the best at getting rid of unwanted male attention. Case in point- yesterday on the bus:

I had to get a book to review for my Islam and Christianity in Africa course. The professor had just given us a list and wanted us to choose a book from the list. I was wanting to do something on the subject of women so I choose "Civilizing Women in the Sudan" and I go on my merry way. So I hop on the bus back to my office and begin reading the intro and come to find out this book has a very surprising, albeit interesting, focus. And of course, at the next stop, a guy gets on, sits right next to me ( in an otherwise empty bus) and begins chatting me up. I tried to answer with one word responses and stare at my book pages in earnest to deter him but he was a persistent bugger. And then comes the inevitable question, "So what's your book about?"

So I told him- "Oh female genital mutilation in the Sudan".

The look on his face was priceless. He could only muster this response (which I feel, given the circumstances, was quite odd): "Oh...I've heard that's pretty painful" to which I replied, "Yeah, I guess..." and he got off on the next stop.

I couldn't even make that up if I tried. A friend told me I should have said, "Yeah, I'm considering getting it done". That is even more awesome. So now, when asked whatever I'm reading by some overly-friendly stranger, this will be my stock response.

Just me and you and seven other dudes...

I've had this song stuck in my head all week. Problem is- if I begin singing it outloud (especially at work) people think I'm insane. Justin Timberlake or Madonna need to come out with a new song pronto! I'm getting odd looks.

Especially because I keep getting stuck on the lines:
"You could be a part-time model, but you'd probably still have keep your normal job"...and then I laugh outloud because that is hilarious.

<lj-embed id="3" />

PS- We saw the X-files movie. And it was good. Oh yes. I said it. In fact- borderline awesome. Especially Scully's hair. Although it made her face look a little droopy.

Basking in the glow of Mulder and Scully.

We saw The X-files: I Want to Believe last night. And it was actually good! We both REALLY LIKED it.

Mulder and Scully still have fab chemistry and the storyline- aside from being a little more "horror filmy"- was classic X -files. Mulder still had awesome quips and Scully was still as intense as ever. Billy Connolly played a "fallen" priest- and while B feels that they might have picked someone better for the part- I liked his performance. My only regret was the other FBI characters. Amanda Peet played one of them and I felt like her and the other guy's characters pretty much sucked. Aside from that- it was like a long, stand-alone episode and that is what I wanted. Also totally awesome- Skinner cameo!

Bad news: I'm working after staying up until 2:30am. Mulder is worth the fatigue.
